In the short term fix, the dollar sign on the digital billboard type clock near Times Square rose to a figure - the "1" in $ 10 billion. It is the marking of the federal government's current debt to about $ 10.2 billion.

The Durst Organization said it plans to update the sign next year by adding two digits. This will be able to follow the debt up to a quadrillion dollars.

The end of Manhattan real estate Seymour Durst put the sign in 1989 to draw attention to what was then $ 2.7 trillion of debt.
